Activity: A Gentle Introduction to Bayesian Statistics

Overview

In the first part of the project we chose to start by drafting a needs analysis for students entering the course and reviewing and identifying existing resources for texts, slide decks, homeworks, and labs that might be suitable for our course.

Specifically we have identified the following tasks:

  • Determine software for course
  • Determine books/resources that we’ll use (for us and/or students)
  • Draft a needs analysis (what background are students coming into the course with)
  • Outline a syllabus, including how the course will be graded and what components we’ll use to determine grades (e.g. assignments, exams, projects, etc.)
  • Formally state course objectives and learning outcomes
  • Draft a course schedule.
  • Finalize topics to be covered.
  • Draft Homework and Activity Plan

Completed Materials

We have completed the following of our original tasks:

  1. Determine software for course

We will use R and RStudio. We will start the students off using web-r before transitioning to RStudio for assignments. Laurie would like to find out if it is possible to save work in web-r as this seems to be the biggest drawback of using web-r.

  1. Determine books/resources that we’ll use (for us and/or students)

We identified several existing resources to use for the course:

We will use these books and lessons to plan the lectures and readings for students. We will pay attention to differences in notation and think about which resource we will recommend to students.

  1. Draft a needs analysis (what background are students coming into the course with)

We have drafted an initial needs analysis. This will be included in the syllabus and policies folder.

  1. Outline a syllabus, including how the course will be graded and what components we’ll use to determine grades (e.g. assignments, exams, projects, etc.)

We have outlined a syllabus including a course description and a brainstorm of possible assessments. It might be that the semester-long 1/2 credit course and the 3.5 week “short-term” course may have different assessment strategies given the duration of the course.

  1. Formally state course objectives and learning outcomes

We have drafted a set of learning goals in the syllabus document. We plan to further refine these into course objectives and learning outcomes.

We have not yet completed these items:

  1. Draft a course schedule.
  2. Finalize topics to be covered.
  3. Draft Homework and Activity Plan

Next Steps

Before our check in with Mine we will draft the homework and activity plan which will identify the assignments and activities we will develop in the next stage of the project. So far we have identified a few case studies we are considering are:
